Food Scientist - R&D Process Improvements

One of the cornerstones in our business is our dedicated experts that develop solutions with our functional and nutritional whey proteins, milk minerals, lactose and permeate.

 

The work environment

• Your new work place will be in the R&D center in Nr. Vium – where about 75 people are employed (technicians, scientists and administrative employees).  R&D has outstanding Pilot and laboratory facilities, and is currently in the process of building a new innovation center.

Join an experienced team

You will be employed in the R&D Deploy - Process Improvements Department where we are currently 9 scientists. Your new colleagues have extensive experience in several areas of dairy technology such as membrane filtration, drying, heat treatment, crystallization and evaporation. Knowledge sharing and technical discussions with colleagues is part of the daily work.  The tasks are performed in close collaboration with both internal and external partners – and often as part of larger projects.

 

Projects & Tasks

Your first project will be in relation Lactose processing- where you together with the project team optimize the processes. The process optimization steps will primarily be lactose crystallization and fluid bed drying.

 

Your tasks as a food scientist are:

• Project Management of technical R&D projects

• In-depth work from theory to innovative and sustainable solutions.

• Follow your ideas from theory to implementation.

• Plan and perform pilot trials together with our highly skilled pilot technicians

• Optimization and troubleshooting of production processes– together with the Supply Chain organization

• Testing new unit operations

• Process simulations, mass and energy balances

 

Your profile

You are an experienced profile or you could be newly educated. You have a MSc degree or similar in dairy science, food science, biotechnology, chemical engineering, chemistry, or you have acquired similar knowhow.

 

You have in-depth knowledge about dairy and/or chemical unit operations. and you are able to quickly get an overview of processes. You show perseverance and like to understand technical aspects in detail.  Sustainability is very important for AFI and you strive to make sustainable technical solutions.

 

You are a technical generalist and you find it easy to acquire new technical knowledge – and are able to convert theory to practice. You find it natural to perform optimizations in different environments (laboratory, Pilot Plant and large scale production). You are able to drive production trials together with the SC organization at the different production sites.

In the beginning of your job you will be working mostly with Lactose processing, but with time you will also work on other parts of the whey/milk processes.

 

It will be an advantage if you have some of the below shown competencies:

 

• Knowledge of with heat treatment, crystallization, evaporation and drying (spray drying and fluid bed drying) 

• Knowledge of with membrane filtration of milk and whey (MF, UF, NF, RO and others)

• You have very good mathematical skills and like to model processes

• Basic knowledge of milk proteins, fat, minerals and their characteristics

• Experience with project management

 

You have an out-going and open-minded personality and you like to work both independently and in a team. The work environment is international with several different nationalities. You work in a proactive way.  You speak and write English at a high level. Some travelling shall be expected, as AFI has production sites several places.
