Procurement Category Manager - Commodities - Europe

You will work out of any of our procurement offices e.g. Aarhus, Copenhagen, Leeds, Düsseldorf, Stockholm, or Gdansk.


Would you like to take on category management on a strategic level? We are looking for a new category manager responsible for commodities sourcing in our ingredients team.

You will join 120 colleagues in Procurement team spread across Denmark, Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, UK, Poland, Bahrain, the UAE and Hong Kong. On behalf of our global organization, we manage procurement activities of an annual spend of 4+ billion EUR.

About the job

Within our Ingredients & International team dedicated to a wide array of procurement categories, we are looking for a manager to handle our salts, starches, cheeses, milk-based powders & grain-based categories. Over time these categories may develop – driven by opportunities and business needs.

Combined you will have an ability to influence 100 mEUR+ of spend across 300+ SKUs and 43+ sites globally. In this role you will report to Ingredients & International Procurement Sr. Director, Bob den Hartog, sitting within our newly-created commodities team.  

We expect you to successfully navigate the complexity of the commodities categories you manage as you:

  • Define, develop and implement the sourcing strategy as well as tools & processes to facilitate sourcing decisions within your categories
  • Manage projects strongly - involving and efficiently coordinating between stakeholders and suppliers
  • Develop, launch and drive RFPs (incl. eAuctions) to select suppliers in targeted categories in cooperation with stakeholder
  • Establish and develop optimal relationships with our suppliers, ensuring that they meet our high-quality standards and deliver timely solutions, products and deliver services at agreed prices
  • Negotiate contracts and lead contract ratification activities
  • Collaborate with senior stakeholders such as Production VP’s and Production Site Directors to secure the most efficient sourcing approaches, secure suppliers and mitigate challenges
  • Drive the compliance agenda in Arla within your categories together with your key stakeholders
  • Make ongoing forecasts and follow up on procurement performance together with our finance department & Sr Director

In addition, you have the ability to work closely together with your colleagues in Procurement, QEHS (quality, environment, health and safety department), our Dairies, Innovation and Marketing.

Who are you?

Your background covers a commercial degree at master’s level, supplemented with experience from handling commodities or category management from a previous role.

Experience within purchasing ingredients will be considered a very strong advantage.

Whether you have worked at an international company or perhaps a consultancy, you have acquired strong project management skills driving processes, including negotiating and landing contract agreements.  

You are experienced in business partnering, building positive relationships and managing stakeholders at all levels of the organization.

Your analytical skills allows you to be comfortable changing from a high level and strategic view to doing operational tasks to deep dive for insights.

It is likewise important that you have a good understanding of complex negotiations, contracts and the commercial aspects behind them.

 Furthermore, you:

  • Have several years of experience within commodities sourcing, hedging, and/or trading – preferably within ingredients
  • Are familiar with market & financial intelligence tools within trading (e.g. Bloomberg, Mintec, Kairos, Reuters, etc.)
  • Are fluent in written and spoken English

You are skilled at developing relationships with the empathy to understand the human elements in a change journey, whilst retaining focus. You are resilient and determined to achieve your objectives but possess the flexibility to listen to push back and work collaboratively to achieve our agreed goals.
