Research Scientist, Food Physics - Aarhus
Aarhus N, DK
For our Food Physics team in Aarhus, we are looking for a Research Scientist with a passion for food physics preferably with a strong understanding of food structure and functionality including rheology and interactions between dairy and non-dairy constituents e.g. hydrocolloids and polysaccharides to create the desired food structure.
About our team
We have a global role in Arla R&D and are based in Arla’s Innovation Centre in Aarhus, Denmark. Our purpose is to transform food physics into business opportunities for Arla. We drive food physics based research, partner up with product developers to create the future of dairy and support our production sites worldwide with ad hoc tasks. We are a team of scientists and technicians with vast experience within food physics and we are eager to find a new colleague to share our scientific passions with.
Key partner to various innovation projects
As a scientist in food physics you will be a key element in our strategic focus on developing the future technologies and products for Arla. By utilising your knowledge within food structure and functionality, physical stability and your analytical approach, you drive science and innovation from lab scale to pilot plant trials and communicate this to your stakeholders. You will be a key partner in innovative science projects and tasks with focus on food physics and you will provide expert knowledge on the link between food structure and the resulting product properties. You will be responsible for handling multiple tasks in parallel and will work independently, but always as part of a team of scientists and technicians. In this role you will combine your strong scientific skills with a business mindset.
This means that you:
- Will be a key partner in various innovation projects related to food physics, covering interactions between dairy and non-dairy constituents and their impact on product properties including structure, rheology, functionality and physical stability.
- Drive research and innovation projects in the food physics scientific area, making sure they meet expectations for deliverables, time and resources. This includes internal research projects but also external research projects in close collaboration with our university partners globally
- Maintain, build and strengthen competencies through internal and external research projects related to food physics
- Provide recommendations to product development teams by combining your analytical skills with your knowledge on structural engineering of food products including the effect of processing on specific ingredients and interactions
- Maintain, build and strengthen our analytical competencies within structure, functionality and physical stability with a primary focus on rheology, texture and physical stability analytical methods. This will be done in close collaboration with our R&D laboratory technicians
- Perform ad hoc support to the business solving food physical related issues specifically within impact of structure on function and product stability
- Proactively enable a two-way transfer of knowledge between the organisation and relevant internal and external partners
- Are able to work in a multidisciplinary team with colleagues across different science areas, from production, suppliers and product developers
- Deliver new business opportunities through science application and technology exploration
Scientist with a solid Food Physics background
You hold a Master’s degree or PhD in food physics, chemical engineering, dairy science, food technology, dairy chemistry, carbohydrate chemistry or similar relevant education. Besides in-depth knowledge within food physics some of the following skills will be advantageous:
- Thorough understanding of impact of food structure on sensory properties
- Hands-on experience with analytical tools for characterisation and quantification of food structure texture analysis, rheology, tribology etc.
- Fundamental knowledge on design of experiments, data analysis and statistics
Besides scientific competencies, to have success in this role, it would be advantageous for you to:
- Be a curious and creative team player that at the same time thrive in an independent role in an international environment
- Be a good communicator with strong stakeholder management skills to engage both internal and external collaborators
- Possess a structural and analytical approach to your work, both in terms of planning, reporting and keeping an overview of ongoing tasks
- Be fluent in both spoken and written English
What we offer
A position where you will be at the cutting edge of research in your field. A dynamic job where you will have some travel days visiting our sites, universities as well as external collaboration partners. A true learning experience, as some of your tasks will be longer term and some shorter term, you can always be sure to be challenged with tasks inside and outside of your scientific comfort zone. An international environment where scientific knowledge sharing and continuous learning are key words. Last but not least we offer you a team that values open communication, good team spirit, trust and respect.
Application and contact
We will review applications and invite for interviews on an ongoing basis, so please apply as soon as possible. For additional information, please call Head of Food Physics, Senior R&D Manager Mette Bakman at +45 91 31 15 36. (Not available from 28 January to 5 February due to holiday).
